About

Dr Philip Dodd,

Consultant

Anaesthetist

During my medical degree, I studied Physiology for an extra year to gain my BSc, which opened my eyes to the way the human body can be adjusted and manipulated.

After graduation from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, I spent my junior doctor years unsure of my future path. However, I subsequently worked in A&E under the supervision of a trained anaesthetist, who showed me a better way to treat patients. Inspired by him, I gained my training in Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine based at St Georges’ Hospital, London. Thereafter I studied in Perth, Australia as a Research Fellow (in Acute Pain) and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Western Australia. I was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester (RHCH) in 2004, which is now part of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

As an NHS consultant, my focus has always been rapid recovery. Since my appointment I have been the Clinical Lead for Day Surgery, embracing all techniques to allow increasingly complex surgical patients to recover in the comfort of their own home. I have also led the Hip and Knee replacement Enhanced Recovery programme at RHCH which reduced the average hospital length of stay by 2 days. I set up and ran the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit locally for RHCH ensuring the best care for an under represented group of patients, reducing the mortality by 30%. I am the anaesthetic representative to the Thrombosis Committee dealing with the management and prevention of blood clots during hospital admission. I am an Educational Supervisor for our junior anaesthetic trainees
